1986: Terriers win their first Hockey East tournament title in the Providence Civic Center, thumping BC 9-4 behind MVP Peter Marshall's hattrick and a pair of goals by Jeff Sveen. Single goals were added by John Cullen, Clark Donatlli, Scott Shaunessy and Brad MacGregor. Terry Taillefer stopped 39 Eagle shots. Terriers had been mired at 9-9-2 as of Jan. 10, but embarked on a 15-3-2 run that brought them to the second-ever title game in the new Hockey East Conference. The tournament win was the first of seven Hockey East titles for BU.

1971: Terriers improved their record to a gaudy 19-1-1 with an 8-3 rout of New Hampshire at Boston Arena. BU jumped to a 3-0 first period lead with markers from John Danby, Guy Burrows and Steve Stirling--all within a two-and-a-half minute span. Second period was a bit more even with the home team scoring three more times and the visitors responding with a pair. Ric Jordan, Bob Gryp and Bob Murray tallied for BU. Jordan's second of the game and a goal by current UMass coach Don "Toot" Cahoon closed out the BU scoring in the third while Dick Umile, now the UNH mentor, scored for the Wildcats. Dan Brady made 26 saves for BU.

1991: Tony Amonte recorded the fastest hattrick in Beanpot Tournament history with a trio of goals with 5:24 of the second period as BU cruised past BC, 8-4, for its XX beanpot championship and 16 win of the season. Amonte earned tournament MVP honors, succeeding Dave Tomlinson who won the honor in 1990. Defenseman Mark Krys scored his first collegiate goal while David Sacco's pair of assists brought him to the 100-career point mark. BU also received goals from Petteri Koskimaki, Peter McCann, Doug Friedman and Mark Bavis. John Bradley stopped 34 shots to earn the win.

1971: BU’s 14 game unbeaten streak to begin the 70-71 season came to an end at Cornell’s Lynah Rink with the Big Red taking a 5-1 win. Toot Cahoon gave the Terriers a 1-0 lead midway through the first, but Cornell matched it and added a go-ahead goal before the period ended. The defeat left BU still seeking its first-ever win against Cornell—which would come less than two months later in the ECAC tournament.

1991: Terriers used a four-goal first period to level Lowell, 7-4, and raise their record to 16-6-2. Defenseman Peter Ahola, recorded his second two-goal game of the season, while BU also got goals from Keith Tkachuk, Tony Amonte, David Sacco, Ed Ronan and Chris McCann. John Bradley stopped 20 Lowell shots. Forward Mike Bavis—now BU’s associate head coach—suffered a broken jaw in the game, but would return to the lineup after missing only eight games.

1971: BU extended its unbeaten streak to 14 games (13-0-1) with a 13-4 thumping of Dartmouth at Boston Arena. Senior wing Wayne Gowing led the attack with four goals and junior wing Bob Gryp recorded a hat trick, while junior Don "Toot" Cahoon added a pair. Singleton by junior Bob Murray, and three sophomores—Steve Dolloff, Ric Jordan and Ron Anderson—rounded out the scoring. Murray also had four assists. Terriers emerged from the first period with a 3-2 lead thanks to Gowing’s first goal; then, following an emphatic between-periods address by Coach Jack Kelley, they exploded to outscore Dartmouth by a 5-1 margin in each of the next two periods.

1970: In a battle of undefeated teams, BU and Harvard battled to a 4-4 overtime tie at a sold-out Watson Rink. Crimson took an early 1-0 lead when All-American Joe Cavanagh’s ten-footer got past Tim Regan, but the lead lasted just nine seconds with Toot Cahoon scoring, assisted by Steve Stirling and Mike LaGarde. Harvard went ahead again late in the first period on a Bob McManama goal. In the second period BU scored the equalizer when LaGarde sent Stirling in for a point blank shot and then took its first lead on Peter Thornton’s unassisted goal. Harvard knotted the score again on Dave Hynes’ power play goal. BU’s second lead of the game came 30 seconds into the third period on Bob Gryp’s shorthanded goal, assisted by John Danby and Wayne Gowing. But Harvard’s Dan DeMichele got that one back less than two minutes later. Another 23 minutes of action, including the overtime, produced no winner. Regan stopped 23 shots while his counterpart, Bruce Durno, had 26 saves.

1990: Terriers improve their record to 9-3-1 with a 6-2 win against Providence at Walter Brown Arena. The Friars scored the only first-period goal, marking the first time that season that BU trailed after one. That changed quickly as BU scored four times in the second and twice more in the third. But the key to the game was the Terrier defense that limited PC to just 16 shots and Scott Cashman stopped 14 of them. David Sacco led the goal-scoring with a pair, while Mike Bavis (game-winner), Shawn McEachern, Ed Ronan and Petteri Koskimaki added one apiece. Koskimaki, with a goal and an assist, raised his point total to 20 in 13 games.

1970: BU improved its record to 3-0 with a 5-1 win over Brown. The Terriers, playing on the road again, got an early lead on sophomore Bob Brown’s blueline slapper, just 1:45 into the game. Peter Thornton’s 40-footer doubled the lead before the Bears got on the board. John Danby’s power play goal extended BU’s advantage to 3-1 at the end of one. Bobby Brown’s second of the night and 15-foot wrister by his blueline partner, Ric Jordan, closed out the scoring. Tim Regan, a Providence native, stopped 29 shots for his second win.

1990: BU hosted second-ranked Maine and came away with a 7-4 win behind two-goal efforts by Shawn McEachern and Petteri Koskimaki. With a 2-1 lead after one period, Terriers broke the game open with four second-period markers. Keith Tkachuk, Mark Bavis and Scott Lachance were the other BU goal scorers. McEachern’s 2-1-3 line for the game capped off a standout week that earned him Hockey East Player of the Week honors. Scott Cashman stopped 27 Black Bear shots in BU’s first win over Maine in more than a year. The win improved the Terriers' record to 7-3-1.

1970: Terriers completed a two-game sweep of St. Louis, thumping the Billikens, 9-1, behind two goals apiece from senior Wayne Gowing and sophomore Ron Anderson. Captain Steve Stirling began the onslaught followed by goals from Don “Toot” Cahon and Gowing to stake BU to a first-period 3-0 lead. Sophomore defenseman Bob Brown scored the first of his 17 goals for his rookie season, followed by Gowing’s second and Anderson’s pair. John Danby and Peter Thornton also scored for BU. sophomore Stefan Brueckner had 12 saves to gain his first varsity win.

1970: BU opens what would become a season like none other before in school history on the road with St. Louis University, a new Division I program. Coach Jack Kelley's Terriers, who were hardly generous guests, posting an 8-0 victory, made an early statement with goals by Juniors Bob Gryp and John Danby—his first of three—coming before the game was two and a half minute old. Sophomore Steve Dolloff added a pair of goals while seniors Wayne Gowing and captain Steve Stirling also found the net. Junior netminder Tim Regan stopped 18 shots to earn the shutout.

1990: BU scored early and often en route to a 7-2 win against Princeton in a penalty-filled game at ancient Hobey Baker Rink. Terriers found the net five times in the first period and coasted to the victory. Freshman Jon Pratt scored the game-winner, with the other goals coming from Keith Tkachuk, Tony Amonte (photo), Petteri Koskimaki, Dave Tomlinson, David Sacco and Alex Legault. Goalie Scott Cashman, the 1989-90 Hockey East Rookie of the Year returned to the BU lineup after missing three games dues to blurred vision and made 13 saves. 1988: Both Mike Kelfer and David Tomlinson broke a Hockey East record by scoring seven points apiece in BU’s 12-3 home victory over Providence. Kelfer scored three goals in a span of 3:10, which remains the fastest hat trick in Hockey East history.

1995: BU nails down its fourth NCAA championship with a convincing 6-2 win over conference rival Maine at the Providence Civic Center, which also was the site of BU’s 1978 national title. The Terriers had played Maine three times previously during the season, losing once and tying twice. But on this day, the result was far different.

Steve Thornton, later voted team MVP, got things going late in the first period scoring from a faceoff to the left of Maine’s Blair Allison. BU stretched the lead to 3-0 on second period goals by Chris O’Sullivan and Captain Jacques Joubert, before Tim Lovell got Maine on the board. The Black Bears cut the lead to one in the first minute of the third period on Trevor Roenick’s power play goal. But BU put the game out of reach with O’Sullivan’s second goal and scores by Mike Sylvia and Bob Lachance. Tom Noble stopped 21 Black Bear shots, while Allison had 33 saves. O’Sullivan, a second team All-American, was chosen the game’s Most Outstanding Player. He was named to the all-tournament team along with Shawn Bates and Kaj Linna.

BU finished the season with ten consecutive wins and 15 victories in its final 16 games.

1995: In the NCAA Final Four semifinal in Providence, Terriers erupt for four third period goals to skate past Minnesota, 7-3. Captain Jacques Joubert and Doug Wood scored in the first period. Matt Wright gave BU a 3-2 lead in the second, but the Gophers knotted the game at three. Bob Lachance scored the go-ahead goal in the final period, followed by goals from Chris O'Sullivan, Shawn Bates and Mike Sylvia. Derek Herlofsky, a Minnesota native, turned asside 30 Gopher shots.

1990: BU's remarkable post-season run came to an end with a 3-2 loss to Colgate in the NCAA semifinals. BU, led by captain Mike Sullivan and Joe Sacco, had won three best-of-three series, each time losing the first game before winning the next two: Northeastern in the Hockey East quarter-finals, then North Dakota and Michigan State (in E. Lansing) in the NCAA tournament.

1978: Boston University won its third national championship in the first all-East final since BU's 4-0 shutout of Cornell in 1972. The Terriers defeated arch-rival Boston College, 5-3, in the first ever NCAA tournament meeting between the schools. BU was led by freshman Mark Fidler, who registered a 30-goal season, and three future Olympic gold medalists, Dave Silk, Jack O'Callahan and Jim Craig. After Fidler scored 38 seconds into the game, BC's Joe Mullen and Bobby Hehir put the Eagles on top. Goals by Silk and Tony Meagher restored BU's lead. Meagher's second and Fidler's second extended the lead to 5-2 before BC added a final tally. Craig stopped 28 shots while BC's Paul Skidmore had 31 saves. The win capped a 30-2 season for BU, which had won its first 21 games before falling to Yale.

1990: In game 2 of its best-of-three NCAA quarterfinal with Michigan State, BU rebounded for a 5-3 win to knot the series at one apiece. The Terriers got goals from Captain Mike Sullivan, Shawn McEachern, Tony Amonte, Ed Ronan, and Phil von Stefenelli in the game played at Munn Arena in East Lansing. Scott Cashman stopped 23 shots for BU.

1996: Defending national champion BU won the NCAA regional tournament in Albany, edging Clarkson, 3-2. Chris Drury, Bill Pierce and Mike Sylvia staked the Terriers to a 3-0 midway through the second period. The Knights scored twice in the final period to make it close. Tom Noble had 20 saves for the Terriers.

1991: BU completed a two-game sweep of Michigan in the NCAA quarterfinals with an 8-1 thumping at Walter Brown Arena. (QFs were played on campus at the time). Tony Amonte led the way with a pair of goals while single goals were added by Petteri Koskimaki, Dave Tomlinson, David Sacco, Ed Ronan, Tom Dion and Darin MacDonald. BU scored its eight goals on just 29 shots, while John Bradley shot 21 of 22 Wolverine shots. The sweep avenged a regular-season loss to Michigan, 8-6, also at WBA.

1978: The Terriers met defending national champion Wisconsin in the NCAA semifinal in Providence and came away with a 5-2 win. Dave Silk scored twice and John Bethel, Tony Meagher and Mark Fidler added goals. Co-captain Jack O'Callahan assisted on four of the five goals and Jim Craig had 20 saves.

1997: Chris Drury's goal at 12:20 of overtime gave Boston University a 4-3 win over Denver in the NCAA East Regional Final in Worcester. The second-seeded Terriers (Clarkson was the #1 seed) had taken a 3-2 lead with 3:19 left in regulation on Shawn Bates' shorthanded breakaway goal. However, the Pioneers forced overtime with an extra-attacker goal by Eric Anderson, beating Michel Laroque with 53 seconds left. In the overtime, Chris Kelleher took a pass from Jon Coleman and fired a shot from the left point. Drury was locked up with Denver defender in front of the net, but, while falling down, slid the rebound past tournament MVP Jim Mullin.

Drury's goal was his 37th of the season. Albie O'Connell had a pair of goals for BU, which would go on to upset defending champion Michigan in the Frozen Four semis before losing to North Dakota in the final.

1971: Boston University defeated Minnesota, 4-2, at the Onondaga County War Memorial Auditorium in Syracuse, NY, to win its first NCAA championship. Terrier goalie Dan Brady made 32 saves and was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player, while captain and All-American Steve Stirling scored two goals--the second one unassisted--to lead BU to the title. Bob Gryp and Ron Anderson had the other goals. BU finished with a 28-2-1 record and scored a then-record 210 goals while yielding just 60. For the season, the Terriers averaged a 7-2 and had a 40% power play percentage.

The tournament had originally been scheduled to be held at BU’s brand new Walter Brown Arena, but construction delays forced the change in venue. WBA would open the following season.

1995: Boston University won the final college hockey game played at the old Boston Garden, defeating Providence College, 3-2, to win its 4th Hockey East championship and complete the second leg of what would be the second "triple crown" season (Beanpot, league championship, NCAA title) in Terrier history. PC 's first period goal by Chad Quennville was matched by BU's Ken Rausch. Mike Grier put the Terriers ahead in the second before the Friars knotted the score on a Brady Kramer slapper past a screened Derek Herlofsky. Then, late in the second, Chris Drury muscled his way off the sideboards and passed to Matt Wright, who wheeled, closed on the net and whipped a shot past PC goalie (and tournament MVP) Bob Bell for the game-winner. Bell had 40 saves and Herlofsky, 24. Wright scored the last college goal at the Old Garden; a month earlier, he'd scored the final Beanpot goal at the Old Garden in BU's 5-1 win over BC in the championship game. All three Terrier goals in the HE championship game were scored by walk-on players: Wright, Rausch and Grier.

1972: Five years to the day after losing to Cornell, 4-1, in the 20th NCAA championship game, Boston University returned the favor, shutting out the Big Red, 4-0, to win its second consecutive NCAA title. A then record crowd of 14,995 fans filled the Boston Garden for the 25th NCAA championship to see the top two teams in the East in a rematch of not only the 1967 NCAA championship, but also the ECAC championship of a week earlier (also won by BU). Forward Ron Anderson scored a power play goal in the first period and defenseman Ric Jordan added one power play goal in the second period. Each scored again in the third period. Goalie Tim Regan, who made 39 saves to lead the Terriers to the championship and only allowed one goal in the final two games, was named Most Outstanding Player.

1950: Boston University, playing in its first Frozen Four, defeated Michigan, 4-3, at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs. Michigan took a 2-0 lead after the first period, but the Terriers controlled the second period as Dick Kelley scored twice while Jack Garrity and William Jurgelevich each scored once. The Wolverines added a goal in the third, but that was as close as they got as BU goalie Ralph "Ike" Bevins made 34 saves for the win.

1986: Boston University won its first Hockey East championship by defeating Boston College, 9-4, in front of 6,134 fans at the Providence Civic Center. John Cullen opened the scoring for the Terriers at 4:08 of the first period when he finished off a give-and-go with Clark Donatelli. Just 1:25 later, Peter Marshall doubled the lead when he picked up Brad MacGregor’s rebound and flipped it past Eagle goalie Scott Gordon. Boston College pulled within one while on the powerplay when Doug Brown scored on a rebound at 13:50 of the first.

The Terriers broke the game open in the second period, as they scored five straight goals to take a 7-1 lead after 40 minutes. BU came out fast and Donatelli scored a powerplay goal on a Cullen rebound just 53 seconds into the period. Fifty-five seconds later Marshall got just enough of his stick on a MacGregor rebound to get the puck over the goal line. Scott Shaunessy scored next when he made some nice moves on the Eagles defenders and fired the puck past Gordon’s glove at 6:51. At 8:23 Marshall completed his hat-trick when he shot the puck over Gordon’s stick with a pretty backhand. Finally, Jeff Sveen closed out the scoring in the period when he put the puck through Gordon’s pads at 17:34.

The Eagles attempted to make a game of it in the third period, as Ken Hodge scored at 2:04 to make it 7-2. BC continued to play hard and at 8:58 Scott Harlow put the puck in the net to make it 7-3. The Terriers, however, put a swift end to any BC hopes, as MacGregor scored at 11:11 and Sveen got his second goal of the game just 63 seconds later. The Eagles’ John Devereaux closed out the scoring for the game with his goal at 14:39.

2003: Boston University outlasted Boston College, 6-5, in double overtime, in the Hockey East semifinals at TD BankNorth Garden. Justin Maiser's second goal (video) sent the game into overtime. He completed his hattrick in the second extra session to win it (video).

1974: In Jack Parker's first year as Terrier head coach (he succeeded Leon Abbott six games into the season), BU reached the Final Four meeting Minnesota in the semifinal. The Gopher's held a 4-2 lead in the third period, but two goals by freshman Rick Meagher--one on a brilliant end-to-rush--tied the score. With regulation time winding down, BU went on the power play, but Mike Polich of Minnesota picked up a loose puck, skated in and beat goalie Ed Walsh for a 5-4 win.

1977: Boston University won their fourth straight ECAC title (and fifth in six years) as they defeated New Hampshire, 8-6, to cap off a wild championship weekend that saw 55 goals scored in four games.

The Wildcats struck just 28 seconds into the game when Bob Gould beat Terrier netminder Jim Craig. After one period it was 4-3 for New Hampshire with the difference being Jack O’Callahan’s own goal. In the second the Wildcats outshot the Terriers 21-7 and hit 5 or 6 posts, but Craig only allowed only 2 goals, while UNH’s goalie Mark Evans let in 3 goals on just 7 shots. In the third BU scored the only two goals to secure the win and championship.

Mike Eruzione and Matt Marden each scored twice while Dave Silk, Gary Fay, Bill O’Neill and John Melanson each scored once. Eruzione (2-2-4) and Rick Meagher (0-4-4) topped the scoring sheet with 4 points each, while Craig made 36 saves for the win.

1972: Boston University won its first ECAC Tournament championship defeating arch-rival Cornell, 4-1, at Boston Garden. The win ended seven seasons of frustration as the Terriers had lost in 5 of the 6 previous semifinals (3 times to Cornell) and once in the championship game (also to Cornell) in 1967. John Danby, Bob Brown, Dave Wisener and Peter Thornton scored for the Terriers, while Dan Brady only allowed Cornell one goal in the victory.

Danby, who netted a hat trick the night before in the semifinal win vs. Harvard, was named the tournament MVP, but according to The Intercollegiate Hockey Newsletter the Terriers won because of defenseman Bob Brown. The reports called him "probably the finest blueliner ever to play in the East" and "the sort of star who affects the play of the entire team."

1991: Shawn McEachern’s “wonderous dash up the Boston Garden ice to score 2:19 into overtime” (quoting the late, great Boston Globe writer Joe Concannon) gave BU a 4-3 win (video) over Maine and its second Hockey East Tournament championship. The Terriers’ other goal scorers were Tony Amonte, Ed Ronan and Peter Ahola. McEachern, Ahola and goalie John Bradley were named to the All-Tournament team. McEachern, the tournament MVP, finished the season with 82 points and earned first team All-American honors.

In a penalty filled first period (14 penalties were called for 36 minutes: 8-for-24 on Maine and 6-for-12 on BU) the Terriers took the lead at 6:44 while the teams were playing 4-on-4. Petteri Koskimaki pushed the puck to Mark Krys who passed it to Ronan and he shot in into the net off Garth Snow’s pads. In the second period another 8 penalties were called, 3 on Maine and 5 on BU. At 12:27 Mark Bavis went off for crosschecking and the Black Bears needed only 5 seconds to score the equalizer. Jim Montgomery won the face-off in the BU zone and sent the puck into the corner where Jean-Yves Roy won it away from Krys, circled in front of the net and put it into the corner on a low shot that beat Bradley.In the third there were only two penalties, but both resulted in goals that tied up the game. First Maine took a 2-1 lead at 9:22 when Dave LaCouture, who was in front of Bradley, put home a rebound of a shot by Matt Martin at the right point. BU tied it up at 12:01 halfway through a powerplay. McEachern got the puck out of a scramble behind the net and passed it to Amonte, who put it past Snow. The Terrier regained the lead with just 3:15 left in the period. McEachern took the puck and started a rush towards the Maine zone. Ahola jumped into the play and rushed down the left wing, took a pass from McEachern and beat Snow to the near side. Ronan was called for interference 17 seconds later and this time the Black Bears took jus 6 seconds to tie the as Keith Carney shot the puck through traffic to make it 3-all. In overtime Phil von Stefenelli intercepted the puck at the BU blueline and passed it up to Amonte, who was along the boards at the Maine blueline. Amonte made nice pass to McEachern who was in full stride in the middle and he skated around the Maine defensemen, and put a backhander through Snow’s legs to win it 2:19 into the period.

1972: BU avenged its ECAC semifinal loss to Harvard in 1971, by dumping the Crimson, 3-1, in the conference semifinal. Prior to this game, BU had lost six of seven semifinals, including the four previous seasons. Captain John Danby scored all three BU goals and became the first Terrier to record three 20-goal seasons,

Riding a 12-game unbeaten streak, the 1970-71 Terriers began the ECAC playoffs with an offensive explosion, ripping RPI 11-0, at Boston Arena. Seven Terriers found the back of the net with Don "Toot" Cahoon, now head coach at UMass, scoring the first of his two post-season hattricks. Captain Steve Stirling and Ray Cournoyea each netted a pair while John Danby, Paul Giandomenico, Steve Dolloff and Bob Murray each added a goal. 1975: Second seeded Boston University needed overtime to defeat seventh seeded Brown, 5-4, at Walter Brown Arena in an ECAC Quarterfinal game matchup. Brown lead most of the game behind a sterling 55-save performance by Kevin McCabe, as the Bruins took a 2-0 lead in the first on a pair of goals by Dave Given. In the second Mike Eruzione got one back for BU, but Brown scored again to lead 3-1 late in the period before Rick Meagher closed it to 3-2 after two. Bill Buckton tied the game at 9:42 of the third, but the Bruins responded and quickly retook the lead, 4-3, on Bill Gilligan’s solo effort. The Terriers tied the game up again when Ken Kuzyk scored with 5:17 left in regulation and sent the game to overtime. Meagher then ended the game at 1:42 overtime on a long shot that eluded McCabe to send the Terriers to the ECAC semifinals for the 10th time in 11 seasons.

1984: Boston University defeated New Hampshire, 5-2, in the second game of a two-game ECAC quarterfinal series to tie it 1-1 and force a 10-minute mini-game to determine which team would advance to the Garden for the ECAC semifinals. Ten minutes was not enough to determine a winner as the Terriers finally prevailed, 1-0, in overtime.

Less than a minute into the game the Wildcats went on the powerplay, but the Terriers clamped down and did not allow a single shot on goal. BU then took the lead at 4:27 when Tony Majkozak beat Bruce Gillies to the far side from 8 feet out. The Terriers then went on the powerplay, but were unable to score and then the Wildcats went back on the powerplay. This time they scored when Dan Potter put the puck in from the crease at 7:17. UNH took the lead at 11:01 on a 30-footer by Shane Skidmore that went through the 5-hole of Cleon Daskalakis. Cesare Carlacci tied the game at 16:41 when he put home a rebound.

The game stayed tied until midway through the third despite a number of great chances by both teams. BU finally retook the lead on a powerplay goal by John Cullen, who scored from 30 feet out after a face-off win by the Terriers. Denis LaGarde made it 4-2 when scored from 10-feet out at 13:47. LaGarde scored again to seal the win for BU and force the mini-game.

In the mini-game the Terriers pressured the Wildcats the entire ten minutes, outshooting them 8-1, but Gillies was up to the task and so the teams moved on to sudden-death overtime. Brad MacGregor finally ended it when he beat Gillies at 1:33 to win the mini-game and series and propelled the Terriers into the ECA semifinals for the final time.

1948: Boston University defeated Middlebury, 5-4, in a regulation 10-minute overtime at Boston Arena. With the win the Terriers clinched the New England Intercollegiate Hockey League regular season title for the second consecutive season and the top seed in the new league tournament (which was being held for the first time).

1978: Boston University pounded Harvard, 7-1, to win their first Beanpot in three years in the Blizzard delayed championship game. The Terriers came out and relentlessly attacked the Harvard goal in the first period. BU took a 2-0 lead after one, but if it were not for Crimson goalie Jack Hynes it could have been much worse. Jack O’Callahan scored at 4:17 on the powerplay when he fired the puck from just inside the blueline in the middle. Mickey Mullen then put in his own rebound at 7:12 on a 3-on-2 break.

Mullen scored again at 3:18 of the second after mucking in the corner and passing the puck back to Bill LeBlond who shot it towards the goal and it deflected in off Mullen, who had gone to the net. The Crimson tried to staunch the Scarlet as Rick Benson won a face-off and wristed a shot past Jim Craig to make it 4-1 and then almost scored another on a deflection 15 seconds later. Mullen completed his hat trick less than two minutes later when he tapped in a rebound of another LeBlond shot. Dick Lamby then scored twice 31 seconds apart early in the third and LeBlond finally scored later in the period for the 7-1 final. All that was left was a brawl that erupted with 3:36 remaining in the game.

Sydney Silberberg played 2½ periods before being relieved by backup netminder Burton Grodberg who played the last ½ of the third period. Holmes Whitmore scored a hat trick, the first by a Terrier against the Eagles, while Charles Viano and Benjamin Currier scored the other goals.

1991: Boston University easily won their single elimination Hockey East quarterfinal game against Merrimack, 7-1, at Walter Brown Arena. Doug Friedman started the scoring at 3:36 of the first when his shot glanced off Merrimack goalie Yannick Gosselin’s glove into the net. David Tomlinson doubled the lead less than two minute later when he took Ed Ronan’s pass and beat Gosselin to the near side. Tony Amonte scored at 13:01 when went behind the net, passed back to Peter Ahola, then took the return pass and put it into the net. Keith Tkachuck made it 4-0 when he gathered up a loose puck out of traffic and banged it home with 1:40 left in the first.

There was no scoring in the second, but there was a scrum at 12:15 when 3 Warriors and 3 Terriers mixed it in front of the BU bench and then Gosselin decided to join the party and high-stick Tomlinson on the head. The 4 Merrimack players received 6 penalties for 12 minutes and the 3 BU players received 4 penalties for 8 minutes.

Tomlinson scored at 2:28 of the third and the period then remained scoreless until a final flurry of goals late in the game. Shawn McEachern scored at 15:49 and just 28 seconds later John Barron beat Scott Cashman to ruin the shutout. Just under two minutes later Chris McCann scored with 1:45 remaining in the game for the final 7-1 score. For the game Cashman made 18 saves of the win while Gosselin made 32 saves in the loss.

Women

2009: Boston University defeated Northeastern, 2-1, in the Hockey East quarterfinals at Walter Brown Arena. Three hundred and eight fans watched as the team won the first playoff game in the program’s four year history. With the win BU advances to the Hockey East Championship for the second consecutive season, where they will face Boston College in the semifinals.

The Terriers stormed the Huskies net in the opening period, out shooting NU 16-5 but were held at bay until late in the period by Florence Schelling. Gina Kearns finally beat Schelling at 17:49 when she knocked in a rebound to give BU a slim 1-0 lead after one. It was the first post-season goal in the program’s history and it was also Kearns’ 50th career goal as she became the first 50-goal scorer in the program’s history.

In the second the shots were even, 14-14, but it was the Huskies who scored the lone goal of the period when Missy Elumba put in a rebound at 14:33 of the period. In the third the defenses for both teams stepped up and as there were only 11 shots (BU 7, NU 4) combined in the period. Jenelle Kohanchuk scored the game winner unassisted at 12:47 as she put the puck under the crossbar on the right side. Allyse Wilcox was solid in net making 22 saves while Schelling was wonderful making 35 saves in the loss.

1990: Boston University defeated Boston College, 4-2, at Walter Brown Arena in the final game of the regular season in front of 3,340 fans. David Tomlinson opened the scored at 5:26 of the first when he received a nice pass from Tony Amonte and beat Eagle’s goalie Scott LaGrand. Just 2:31 later Ed Ronan doubled the lead when he put in the rebound of a Tomlinson shot that LaGrand had made a wonderful save on but was unable to control the puck. Alexandre Legault made it 3-0 when he scored from the left point on the powerplay 1:41 after BU’s second goal. The Eagle’s finally got a goal at 13:45 of the first when David Emma scored from a scramble.

The second period was scoreless, as the Terriers killed off four Eagle powerplays. However, BU lost captain Mike Sullivan as he was checked hard to the ice and had to assisted from the ice. He was taken to University Hospital where he was checked out and it was found he had a badly sprained left ankle. The Eagles scored 59 seconds into the third when Bill Nolan beat Scott Cashman on a two-on-one break with Ted Crowley. That was as close as BC would get and at 9:40 Joe Sacco put home a rebound of a Legault shot to close the door.

1964: Boston University shutout Boston College, 1-0, at McHugh Forum. The first period was closely played, but each team still had chances, with BU putting 14 shots on net and BC putting 10 shots on net. In the second the Terriers continued to hold a slight advantage and it finally paid off at 10:58 when Bruce Fennie beat Tom Apprille for the game’s only goal. Fennie passed to Dennis O’Connell who skated down the right boards and passed back to Fennie, who took a 35-foot shot. The puck hit the post and came back out to Fennie, who had cut to his left and put home a head-on 20-footrt. In the third the Eagles slightly outplayed the Terriers, thanks to two powerplays, but they were not able to beat Jack Ferreira. For the game Apprille made 36 saves in a losing effort and Ferreira made 27 for the shutout win.

1927: Boston University shutout Providence, 12-0, at Rhode Island Auditorium in the first meeting between the two teams. Benjamin Currier and Ovila Gregoire each scored two goals for the Terriers and Charles Viano scored once, but the star of the game was Terrier center John Lawless. Lawless scored seven goals, setting a record he holds to this day. It has only been equaled once, on 15 February 1950, when Jack Garrity scored 7 goals on M.I.T.

1923: Boston University shutout Bates, 6-0, at the Auburn Winter Carnival. It was the Terriers first shutout victory in the team’s history. George Sterling scored a few minutes after the opening face-off, he then scored again, followed by Morey Kontoff and Joseph Almer to give BU a 4-0 lead after one. Bates held BU scoreless in the second with good defense, but in the third period Kontoff scored on a great individual effort, flashing down the ice, dodging the Bates defensemen and drawing Batten from the net. Robert Blais, subbing for Almer, scored the final goal of the game.

1937: Boston University defeated Dartmouth, 4-2, at Davis Rink in Hanover. It was the Terriers first win over the Indians in 5 tries over 11 seasons. The teams annually scheduled a game at Hanover after the first meeting at Boston Arena in 1926, but it had to cancelled because of poor ice due to warm weather until 1934.

In the first period Gerry Desrosiers scored with 25 seconds remaining on a pass from Russell Lynch to give BU a 1-0 lead after one. In the second the Indians tied the game at 2:35 when Bus Foster beat Robert Colburn. The Terriers retook the lead when Al Woodward beat Wesley Goding at 7:50 of the period and Desrosiers made it 3-1 at 12:31 when he scored his second goal of the game. In the third Dartmouth kept the puck deep in the BU zone and peppered Colburn with shots and it paid off when Gordon Clark scored at 8:35 to make it a one goal game. The Indians continued to pressure the Terriers until Desrosiers broke out and scored unassisted after a spectacular dash with 1:20 remaining in the period to complete his hat trick.

1974: Boston University defeated Colgate, 7-2, at Walter Brown Arena in front of 2,322 fans on a Saturday afternoon. Tom Casey scored on the first period to give Colgate a 1-0 lead and goalie Chris Grigg had made it stand up late into the second period. The Terriers finally solved Grigg on the powerplay when Mike Eruzione deflected a Pete Brown blast past him with 2:20 left in the period. Pete Marzo beat him 51 seconds later to give BU a 2-1 lead after two.

Ken Kuzyk scored on a nice play just 26 seconds into the third, Eruzione scored his second of the game at 3:20 and the route was on. Colgate’s John Barnett temporarily stopped the hemorrhaging when he caught Terrier goalie Ed Walsh out of the crease and put the puck in the vacated net. That was followed by the BU’s 5th goal when Bill Burlington pulled all the Red Raiders towards him and Jim Lowell put the puck in the open net. Marzo then scored his second of the game on the powerplay and Eruzione completed his first hat trick as a Terrier with 2:12 remaining in the game.

1971: Boston University defeated Harvard, 4-1, to win its third straight Beanpot and sixth in seven years. It was a torrid, but penalty-marred game in which BU’s Dan Brady and Harvard’s Bruce Durno each had to make over a dozen sensational saves. Paul Giandomenico opened the scoring at 6:31 when he put home a 10-footer from the right of Durno.

The scored stayed that way for the rest of the first and through 2:25 of a 5-3 Harvard powerplay in the second. The Crimson tied the game at 14:15 of the second when Dave Hynes put a 10-footer into an empty net after teammate Bill Corkery crashed into Brady and pulled him out of position. Then, with time running down in the second period Steve Stirling skated behind the net, picked up a rebound and put the puck past Durno from the crease with 15 seconds left in the second.

Steve Dolloff scored at 6:42 of the third. After skating down the left side, he stick-handled through four Crimson players and put a 15-foot backhander into the net. Don Cahoon finished the scoring when he received a perfect pass from Stirling and put it past Durno from 5 feet out.

Women

2009: Boston University defeated Northeastern, 8-1, at Walter Brown Arena in front a new regular game record 750 fans, second all-time behind only the 2008 Beanpot championship game record 1,109 fans. With the win the Terriers finished third in Hockey East, their highest finish in the four year history of the team. Co-captain Gina Kearns, who has never missed a game in her Terrier career, scored a goal and added an assist to become the program’s first 100-point scorer with 49-52-101 in 136 career games.

1959: Boston University upset Clarkson, 4-3, to win their first game in six tries at Walker Arena. It was also the Golden Knights first loss to an Eastern team in four years at Walker. BU also did it with the help of Bob Marquis as Clarkson held him scoreless for only the second time for the season. The first time was also by the Golden Knights, on 18 December (1958) at Boston Arena, a 6-1 Terrier loss.

The Terriers struck quickly as Larry Creighton beat Clarkson goalie Bill Armstrong just 1:27 into the game. Bill McCormack doubled the lead at 15:23 to give BU the 2-0 lead after one. In the second McCormack scored his second goal of the game at 13:52 to make it 3-0 in favor of the Terriers. Clarkson refused to roll over and struck back just 28 seconds later when Mel Tomalty beat BU goalie Ron Tanner. At 15:40 of the second Jim Cross scored to make it 4-1 after two periods. In the third the Golden Knights got that back when Tomalty scored his second of the game at 12:57. Bill Little then made it a one-goal game with 1:23 remaining, but Clarkson was unable to get the equalizer past Tanner.

1987: Boston University defeated U.S. International at the House of Ice in San Diego, California. The Gulls, coached by former Minnesota and future Colorado College head coach Brad Buetow, gave the Terriers all they could handle before succumbing, 5-4.

The Terriers opened the scoring at 9:01 of the first when Mike Sullivan scored just as a penalty on Gulls defenseman Jim Plankers expired. USIU evened the score 63 seconds later when Jim Hau beat Terry Taillefer and the Gulls took their only lead of the 2-game series when Peter Stensgard scored on the powerplay at 16:20 of the period. This time it was BU that responded quickly, as Sullivan scored his second goal of the game 2:16 later to tie the game at 2 after one.

In the second period the Terriers forged a 2 goal lead when Ed Lowney scored unassisted at 3:24 and John Cullen scored on the powerplay at 7:29. The Gulls once again tied the game 3-3 at 10:45 on a goal by Mike McGrath. With 2:51 left in the period BU regained the lead when Scott Shaunessy scored with the teams skating 4x4. In the third period USIU drew within one goal when Stensgard scored his second goal of the game on the powerplay. However, they were not able to get the tying goal past Taillefer, who finished with 28 saves for the win. Gary Shepherd made 28 saves in the loss for USIU.

1947: Boston University defeated Norwich,9-3, on Norwich’s outdoor rink in a night game in below zero weather. To keep his players warm Terrier Coach Harry Cleverly backed the team bus up to the rink and had them sit on it when they were not playing.

1993: Fifteen years and one day after their own quest for a perfect season (77-78) came to an end, Boston University ended Maine’s quest for an undefeated, 7-6, in overtime, at Alfond Arena in front of 5,487 mostly stunned, and a few ecstatic, fans. The Terriers came out hard in the first period, out shooting the Black Bears 11-6. However it was Maine that tallied the only goal of the period when Chris Ferraro beat J.P. McKersie at 6:23, just 17 seconds after killing off a penalty.

Jim Montgomery scored at 2:49 of the second period to give Maine a 2-0 lead, but the celebration was short-lived. Just 51 seconds later Rich Brennan beat Mike Dunham and 36 seconds after that Jacques Joubert scored with the teams skating 4x4 to tie the game at 2-all. Despite the sudden setback the Black Bears retook the lead 55 seconds later when Montgomery scored on the powerplay. Maine retook a 2 goal lead at 7:25 when Paul Ferraro scored on another powerplay and then extended it to 3 goals when Patrice Tardif beat McKersie 39 seconds later.

After giving up 4 goals on 7 shots in the period Coach Parker had seen enough and replaced McKersie with Scott Cashman. Before Cashman was able to settle in Cal Ingraham beat him at 9:32, just 1:28 after coming on in relief. However after that goal he was able to steady the boat and made 9 saves for the period. The Terriers' comeback then began as Mark Bavis scored at 15:01 and Mike Prendergast scored 42 seconds later to make it only a 2-goal deficit for BU after two periods.

In the third the score remained the same with both teams having a powerplay. Less than a minute after killing the Maine powerplay Dan Donato beat Dunham on a third rebound at 11:16 to make it a one goal game. Just 33 seconds later Brennan scored his second of the game when his shot was deflected into the net by a Black Bear to tie it at 6-all. Neither team was able to score again, but Kaj Linna was called for high sticking with 1:06 left in regulation and the Black Bears pressed, including a shot off the post, but were unable to convert before the period ended.

In overtime Maine continued to press and had several more chances but the Terriers were able to survive. Then, less than a minutes after returning to the ice Linna redeemed himself as he made a perfect pass to Mike Pomichter from behind the goal line. Pomichter took the puck at the BU blueline and with Prendergast skated into the Black Bear zone on a 2-on-1. He then made a perfect pass to Prendergast who blasted the puck past Dunham for the Terrier victory at 1:50 of overtime.

1978: Yale defeated Boston University, 7-5, at Ingalls Rink to end the Terriers' 22-game winning streak going back to the NCAA consolation game the previous season and bringing the Terriers quest for a perfect season to an end. Tied at 3 entering the third period Mark Fidler gave BU the lead at 2:06 when he put the puck into the net over the shoulder of Mark Rodrigues. Less than a minute later the Terriers went on the powerplay but it was the Eli who scored when Don Blue scored shorthanded at 3:36 when he put his own rebound past Brian Durocher. The game remained tied until 4:57 was left in the period when Yale defenseman Kirk Bransfield put a 35-foot wrist shot past Durocher. Dave Harrington tipped in a Bill Conway pass seven seconds later to increase the Yale lead to 6-4. Anders Carlsson scored soon after to give the Eli a 3-goal cushion before John Bethel scored a last minute goal for the 7-5 final.

1973: Boston University defeated RPI, 3-2,in overtime, at Houston Field House in front of over 5,000 fans. It was the 10th straight win for the Terriers as they were trying to get make the ECAC playoffs for an 8th straight season after having to forfeit 11 games, including 4 ECAC games.

The Engineers opened the scoring when Tonelli beat Ed Walsh at 12:11 of the first period. The Terriers tied the game a little over 3 minutes later when Steve Dolloff beat RPI’s Cutts at 15:36 to tie the game 1-1 after one. After a scoreless second period BU took the lead midway through the third period on a goal by Paul O’Neil at 10:24. RPI tied it back up when Greco scored at 15:09 of the third. Neither team was able to score the rest of regulation sending the game to overtime where Ken Kuzyk scored the game winner at 4:32 for the Terriers.

2008: Boston University defeated Maine, 1-0, in overtime, at Agganis Arena in front of 5,216 fans. (Video highlights) Terrier goalie Brett Bennett stopped all 17 shots in faced, including 1 in overtime, for his first shutout win. Black Bear goalie Ben Bishop stopped the first 37 shots he faced, including 5 in overtime, before Colin Wilson beat him with 1:30 left in the overtime period when he put the puck in the net off a rebound. Combined with the Terriers 2-1 overtime win over the Black Bears the night before it was the first time that BU had won overtime games on consecutive days in over 22 years. The last time it had happened was on 17-18 January 1986 when the Terriers sweep Northern Michigan in overtime, 5-4 and 8-7, at Walter Brown Arena.

1987: Boston University outlasted Providence, 7-6, in overtime, at Schneider Arena in a back-and-forth game. The Friars opened the scoring just 1:27 into the game when Andy Mattice beat BU goalie Terry Taillefer. Providence doubled the lead when defenseman Jeff Serowik scored at 5:30. The Terriers, however, quickly counter attacked, scoring at 7:04 on a goal by John Cullen and again at 8:51 on a goal by Mike Kelfer to tie the game at 2-all. However, the Friars regained the lead on a powerplay goal by Gord Cruickshank at 11:17 of the first.

After a wild first 11+ minutes there was no more scoring over the next 20 minutes. Despite settling down and making 10 saves in the first, Coach Parker replaced Taillefer with Peter Fish at the start of the second period. The switch seemed to work as Fish saved all nine shots he faced, while the Terriers scored twice on PC goalie Matt Merton. Cullen scored his second goal of the game at 13:38 and Ed Lowney scored at 18:41 to give BU their first lead of the game.

In the third Ville Kentala increased the lead to 5-3 at 5:53, but Fish was unable to hold the lead. First Cruickshank scored his second of the game at 12:41, then Friar Captain Terry Sullivan tied the game at 15:13 and 25 second later Rick Bennet gave Providence the lead, 6-5. The Terriers tied game with Fish pulled for an extra attacker when Clark Donatelli scored with 11 seconds remaining in the period. In overtime Merten made 7 saves (to Fish’s 4) before Mike Sullivan beat him for the game winner at 6:23.

It was the Terriers last win at Schneider Arena for over six years as they would go 0-7-3 in the next ten games.

2008: BU and Maine were deadlocked at 1-1 after regulation, but it took the Terriers just 10 seconds of overtime to end the game. Wes Clark and Chris Higgins traded first period goals but no one could find the net in the second or third. Brian Strait grabbed the overtime faceoff and drove it behind the Black Bears' net. Colin Wilson got there first and backhanded a centering pass to hard-charging Luke Popko who rammed it home. (Video Highlights)

1966: Boston University defeated Harvard, 9-2, to win their second Beanpot title, and their first championship over Harvard in four tries. Harvard opened the scoring when Dennis McCullough beat BU goalie Jack Ferreira. BU would tie the game later in the first when Mike Sobeski beat Harvard goalie Bill Fitzsimmons. It was all BU in the second as Jim Wood, John Cooke and Dennis O’Connell all scored before Pete McLachlan scored twice to give the Terriers a 6-1 lead after two. BU’s Fred Bassi and Harvard’s Tag Demment were also ejected for fighting in the period. In the third period the Terriers increased the lead to 8-1 on goals by Cooke and Don Lumley, before Harvard scored again and Terrier Bruce Fennie closed out the scoring. There were also more fights in the third. Harvard’s Ben Smith and BU’s Sobeski went at each other several times, including at the penalty boxes before being tossed. At the same time BU’s Jim Quinn and Harvard’s Bob Carr went at it and were also ejected.

1994: Boston University won the 1000th game in the program’s history as they shutout Northeastern, 8-0, in the consolation game of the Beanpot Tournament. The win was also the first of a Beanpot record 14 straight victories, as the Terriers won 6 straight Beanpot titles before falling to the Eagles, 3-5, in the 2001 championship game.

2006: Boston University defeated Boston College, 3-2, to win their 27th Beanpot title, an amazing half of the 54 tournament championships. The win was also the Terriers’ 11th straight the longest streak since winning 14 straight at the end of the 1994-95 season and the start of the 1995-96 season. It was also the longest in-season streak since winning 12 straight during the 1993-94 season.

The Terriers had the first three powerplays of the game, but were unable to solve the Eagles’ defense and goalie Cory Schneider. Then just 7 seconds into their first powerplay BC took a 1-0 lead when Peter Harrold’ backhander was stopped by BU goalie John Curry but the rebound was then deflected into the net off a BU skate at 17:28 of the first period.

In the second period the Eagles were the ones unable to score on an early powerplay and the Terriers responded by scoring 23 seconds after the successful penalty kill when Bryan Ewing scored at 4:07 to even the game when in put in the rebound of Peter MacArthur’s second consecutive shot on net. BU took a 2-1 lead midway through the game when Jason Lawrence scored at 9:52 of the second period, just 17 seconds after BU had successfully killed another BC powerplay.

The Eagles tied the game 2-all at 6:24 of the third period when Stephen Gionta’s shot deflected off a Terrier stick and went in past Curry. BU regained the lead for good just 54 seconds later when MacArthur beat Schneider on the powerplay, batting a rebound of a Ewing shot out of the air and into the net. BC had a great chance to tie the game midway through the third, but in Matt Gilroy was able to clear the puck from the scramble in front of Curry.

1973: Boston University defeated Boston College, 4-1, in the Beanpot Championship game to tie the Eagles for the most titles with eight, and to become the first team to win four straight. The Terriers opened the scoring on a powerplay goal by Vic Stanfield at 14:53 of the first, the only goal of the period. In the second BU scored twice less than 2 minutes apart midway through the period when Steve Dolloff scored at 10:13 and Ken Kuzyk scored at 11:54. The Eagles made it 3-1 just 25 seconds later when Mike Powers scored, but that was the only goal BU goalie Ed Walsh would allow. In the third Dolloff scored his second of the game at 4:12 of the period to give BU a 4-1 lead that would hold up the rest of the way.

1991: Boston University, 19-9-2, but only 9-6-1 since the start of the second semester, faced off against Boston College, 24-7 and 13-2 since the start of the second semester, in the Beanpot Championship game. When it was over the Terriers had won their 16th Beanpot, 8-4, over the Eagles.

Boston College strike first, just 54 seconds into the game when David Emma swept a backhand past senior goalie John Bradley. BU responded 63 seconds later when Mark Krys shot the puck over Scott LaGrand’s shoulder for his only collegiate goal. The Eagles regained the lead when Steve Heinze skated up the right side, cut around Kevin O’Sullivan and put the puck past Bradley at 6:08. The Terriers once again responded when Petteri Koskimaki beat LaGrand 1:36 later. That was all the scoring for the first period as the two teams went to the locker rooms tied 2-2, despite BC doubling up BU on shots, 14-7.

In the second period BC once again forged a lead when Joe Cleary beat Bradley on a 5-on-3 powerplay at 9:25 of the second. That was the last lead of the game for BC, as Tony Amonte took center stage. Amonte tied the game at 3-all when he flipped a rebound of a Phil von Stefenelli shot past LaGrand at 12:18. Just 45 seconds later Amonte put home another rebound, this one from a Shawn McEachern shot, on the powerplay to give BU their first lead of the game. The Eagles tied it up 18 second later when David Franzosa skated through traffic and beat Bradley. However, it turned out to be BC’s last gasp.

Amonte put the Terriers ahead for good at 17:43 when he picked up a loose puck and shot it between Cleary’s legs and past LaGrand to complete the fastest hat trick in Beanpot history. Doug Friedman gave BU a 2-goal lead just 46 seconds later when he blasted a shot from the right wing that beat LaGrand. Then with just one second left in the period Mark Bavis spun and put a weak shot on net that eluded LaGrand. In the third Chris McCann scored on another blistering shot, this one from the left wing at 14:43, to close out the scoring. All that remained was for several skirmishes to break out as tempers flared and roughing penalties were handed out. In goal senior John Bradley finally won the Beanpot in net, making 34 saves in the championship game and 62 for the tournament, after sitting on the bench for the previous three seasons .

1958: Boston University defeated Northeastern, 9-3, to win their first Beanpot. Bill Sullivan scored twice in the first to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead, but the Huskies made it 2-1 when Jim Walsh scored at the 15 minute mark. Don MacLeod scored to give BU a 3-1 lead after one. Early in the second period Bill Sweeney scored, then Sullivan completed his hat trick and Don MacLeod scored his second of the game all in 85 seconds to blow the game open. The Terriers increased the lead to 8-1 in the third on a pair of goals by Dave MacLeod, Don’s brother. Art Paresky countered with a pair of his own 20 seconds apart, but NU was unable to get any closer. Bob Marquis put an exclamation point on the win scoring BU’s 9th goal of the night. Bill Sullivan, who also had a goal in the semifinal win over Boston College, was named MVP.

1998: Boston University defeated Harvard, 2-1, in overtime as the senior class became the first to win four Beanpots in the history of the tournament. The Terriers took the lead on Chris Drury’s goal in the second, but Harry Schwefel’s goal in third sent the game to overtime. At 5:51 of the first overtime Nick Gillis scored the game winner.

1965: Boston University defeated Northeastern, 5-4, in triple overtime in the first round of the Beanpot. The Terriers took a 2-0 lead after one on goals by Vic Conte and Fred Bassi. In a wild second period the Huskies tied it up on goals by Charles MacGillivray and Don Turcotte. BU then retook the lead on a goal by Mike Sobeski only to see NU tie the game again on a goal by Paul Bloh. Once again the Terriers forged a lead when Lyman Carter scored and once again the Huskies tied the game on Turcotte’s second goal of the game. Then the goalie took over as NU’s Gary Thornton and BU’s Jack Ferreira did not allow a goal for the next forty minutes. Then, in the third overtime Bassi took a pass from Tom Rossi, split the NU defense, skated in and beat Thornton for the winning goal.

2000: Boston University shutout Harvard, 4-0, in the first round of the Beanpot. Rick DiPietro made 21 saves to earn the win while Jack Baker scored a hat-trick and Chris Heron scored the 4th BU goal. Baker scored at 12:21 of the first and the game remained 1-0 until 9:46 of the third when Baker scored his second of the night. Heron then scored at 16:35 to seal the win and Baker completed his hat-trick when he scored an empty-net goal with 16 seconds remaining in the game.

1918: Boston University was defeated by Boston College, 3-1, at Boston Arena. It was the Terriers first game in the history of the team. It was a very poorly played match that was made up of hit-or-miss shinny for the greater part of the game. BC's Walter Falvey scored twice in quick succession early in the game. The first came on a slow push shot as Falvey crossed in front of BU goaltender Harold Leatherbee. The second came on the ensuing faceoff when Falvey won the draw, carried the puck for a few feet and shot it straight on goal. In the second half Eddie Enright scored the Eagles’ third goal on a straightaway shot that also beat Leatherbee. The Terriers’ lone goal came when Warren Pond scored on a pretty lift from the sideboards.

1978: Outside a blizzard raged, one that buried the city and region, while inside Boston Garden the Terriers buried the Eagles. Sixty years after being defeated by Boston College in the first game between the two teams Boston University pounded the Eagles, 12-5, in the late game of the first round of the Beanpot. Bill O’Neal opened the scoring to give BU a 1-0 lead, but Joe Augustine beat Brian Durocher to tie it up for BC. The Terriers then took what looked like a commanding 4-1 lead on goals by Mickey Mullen, Todd Johnson and Tony Meagher, only to see BC make it a 4-3 game after one period on goals by Bobby Hehir and Billy Switaj.

In the second the lights went out, both figuratively for the Eagles, who lost goalie Paul Skidmore to a groin injury, and literally as the game was halted for 12 minutes at 13:52 so repairs could be made to the lights. After several minutes of play under poor lighting full power was restored. However the Terriers took control during the period as John Bethel and Meagher scored to extend the lead to 6-3, before Paul Barrett scored for BC in an effort to keep pace. It was futile as Bob Boileau and Dick Lamby scored for BU to extend the lead to 8-4 after two.

Between periods the remaining fans were warned over the PA that the storm was getting worse and that they may be locked in overnight if they remained. In the third period the Terriers kept the pressure on as Boileau, Mark Fidler and John Melanson scored on Skidmore’s backup, Mike Cronin, to make it 11-4. Rob Riley scored the Eagle’s last goal before BU’s Paul Miller closed out the scoring for the night. After the game most of the fans had left, but several hundred remained and spent the night or more before being able to get home.

1957: Boston College defeated Boston University, 5-4, in overtime, in the first Beanpot Championship game played between the two teams. The Terriers, looking for their first title, were making their second appearance in the championship game and first since the inaugural tournament in 1952. The defending champion Eagles were making their fourth straight appearance in the championship game and were looking their third title in four years.

BU took a 1-0 lead in the first on a goal by Sarge Kinlin, who doubled the lead when he scored again in the second period. However, BC got on the scoreboard when Terrier goalie Hank Levin put the puck into his own net on a bad clearing attempt of a shot by BC’s Ned Bunyan. The Teriers regain thir two goal lead when Larry Creighton scored to give BU a 3-1 lead after two periods. BC pressured in the third period and it paid off as Dick Kane and Don Fox scored to tie the game at 3-all. The Terriers retook the lead when Kinlin completed his hat trick with just 1:40 remaining in the game. The Eagles came back just 47 seconds later as Bunyan scored his second of the game to force overtime. BC then won the game 2:24 into overtime when Joe Eclat’s shot trickled through Levin’s legs for the winning tally.

1980: Northeastern defeated Boston University, 6-5, in overtime, to advance to the championship game of the Beanpot for the first time since 1967 and only the third time overall. The Terriers were the defending champions and had been in the championship game for a record 16 straight years. It was a back-and-forth game, as both teams took leads but were unable to hold them.

In the first period Billy Cotter gave BU the lead at 5:03 when he went into the NU zone alone and his shot was deflected by a sliding Huskie defender into the net. The Huskies rebounded and at 14:09 Mark Derby finished a 3-in-2 by putting the puck into the net from the crease. NU took the lead just 54 seconds later when Sandy Beadle blasted a 25-foot shot from the left side. Wayne Turner gave the Huskies a 2-goal lead with 24 seconds remaining in the period when he put a 40-footer past Terrier goalie Bob Barich.

The Terriers made it a one-goal game at 17:46 of the second when Grant Goegan converted a pass from Daryl MacLeod from in front of the crease. Goegan tied the game up just 10 seconds into the third period on a 10-foot backhanded shot. The Huskies, however, refused to rollover and Gerry Cowie put them back ahead after taking a passout from Paul McDougall and sinking a 10-foot shot. Goegan tied it up again with his third goal of the night at 4:08 and BU retook the lead at 13:27 when Paul Fenton scored. With just under three minutes remaining in the third period, at 17:04, Turner tied it up, 5-all, when he deflected a hard shot by Dale Ferdinandi past Barich, possibly the best scoring play of the game.

In overtime Ferdinandi almost won it for Northeastern when he blasted a hard shot off the right post. So it was left to John Montgomery to rip home a 45-foot slapshot at 5:09 to win it for the Huskies.

1964: Boston University upset favored Harvard, 3-2, in double overtime in the first round of the Beanpot. It was the first win by the Terriers over the Crimson in 10 games going back almost 5 years and it marked a turning point in the series. BU was 17-41-3 vs. Harvard before the game, but is 55-21-3 since (game included).

The Terriers forged a 2-0 lead after one period on goals by Bruce Fennie and Bob McCabe. The Crimson battled back, cutting the deficit to one on a goal by Smith in the second and tying the game on a goal by Billy Lamarche in the third. In the first 10-minute overtime neither team scored and at 4:34 of the second overtime period Lyman Carter backhanded a rebound past Harvard goalie Brandon Sweitzer from a goal-mouth scramble for the game winner. Jack Ferreira made 34 saves for the win in what is still the second-longest game played by the Terriers in the tournament. It was also the first Beanpot win for second-year head coach Jack Kelley, who would go on to win 6 Beanpot from 1966 to 1972.

1987: Boston University, which was having a disappointing season, upset favored Boston College, 6-3, in the opening round of the Beanpot. The Eagles had swept the four game Hockey East series, but the Terriers once again prevailed in tournament action. The win prevented BC coach Len Ceglarski from becoming the winningest coach in college hockey with 556 victories.

BU came out fast and had several great chances, but was unable to score. BC had a great chance themselves, but likewise failed to score. The Terriers then took the lead at 10:21 of the first period when Mike Sullivan took a pass from John Cullen and put it past Eagle goalie Shaun Real. Despite more great chances for both teams the score remained the same until 10:19 of the second period when Eric Labrosse poked the puck to Jeff Sveen who went in alone on Real, deked him and put the puck into the net. The Terriers increased the lead to 3-0 when Scott Young scored at 12:30 of the second.

In the third both teams had early powerplays, but were unable to capitalize. Five seconds after killing the Eagle powerplay the Terriers scored at 8:20 when Young made a perfect fed to Mike Kelfer who put the puck in the net for a 4-0 lead. BC finally got the puck past Terry Taillefer on the powerplay at 10:21 when Ken Hodge deflected a Brian Leetch shot from the point. The Terriers quickly countered when Labrosse, who was in front of the crease, tipped a Jay Octeau shot into the net 71 seconds later. The Eagles refused to die and Kevin Stevens scored twice 51 seconds apart with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game to make it a 5-3 game. However, Cullen sealed the win when he scored with 60 seconds left in the game.

1999: Boston University upset Boston College, 3-2, in overtime in the opening round of the Beanpot. The game actually ended at 12:15 AM on 2 February as for only the third time in the history of the Beanpot both opening games went to overtime.

The Terriers opened the scoring at 5:09 of the first period when Juha Vuori finished off a setup from Jack Baker. The Eagles tied the game at 11:35 when Jeff Farkas handled a great pass from Mike Mottau and redirected it past Terrier goalie Michel Larocque. BU quickly regained the lead at 1:19 of the second when Carl Corazzini took a pass from a falling Dan Cavanaugh, went around Bobby Allen, and shot it into the net for the score. BC retied the game four minutes and ten seconds later when Farkas scored again when he skated in on net, picked up a Chris Masters rebound and deposited it in the goal.

The Eagle’s appeared to have scored later in the second to take a 3-2 lead when the puck went into the net off Masters’ skate. However, referee Tim Benedetto went upstairs to video official Jim Villandry, and after reviewing the play the goal was waved off. The Eagles were not able to get the puck past Larocque again, nor were the Terriers able to get another one past Scott Clemmensen, so after 60 minutes the game remained tied. In overtime BU won it at 5:10 when Tommi Degerman made a great pass up ice to Chris Heron, who then made a pretty pass to Russ Bartlett, who shot the puck into the net as he was diving forward.

1992: Boston University tied Maine, 4-4, at Orono. The Terriers had lost nine straight at Alfond Arena and Maine was 25-0-1 since a loss to Lowell on 7 December 1990. BU started Scott Cashman in net, but he was shelled for 4 goals on 15 shots in the first period and was relieved by J.P. McKersie at the start of the second. McKersie blanked the Black Bears the rest of the way, making 18 saves to earn the tie, including big ones on Scott Pellerin, who tried a shot between his legs, and Jim Montgomery.

Maine came out flying and pressured BU from the start. The Black Bears scored on the powerplay at 7:11 when Pellerin netted his 21st goal of the season. Kent Salfi then took over and scored at 11:19, with an assist to Montgomery, and again at 16:42, this time unassisted. Brian Downey scored shorthanded with 35 seconds remaining in the period to give Maine a 4-0 lead after one period.

It look like the rout was on, but the Terriers played much better in the second and at 8:44 Jon Jenkins scored BU’s first goal of the game. Then with 16 seconds left in the period Kevin O’Sullivan tucked the puck past Garth Snow to make it a two goal game. The Terriers came out flying in the third and at 2:05 Petteri Koskimaki scored his 15th of the season to close it to one. Just two minutes and twenty seconds later David Sacco tied it up, 4-4. Rich Brennan put the puck on net and Snow made the save, but Doug Friedman took the rebound and shot it off the post and as the puck slide near the line Sacco knocked it in. Both teams then settled down and neither goalie allowed he puck to get by them for the remaining 20 minutes and 35 seconds.

2009: Boston University defeated Merrimack, 3-1, in front of 2,681 fans at J. Thom Lawler Arena for the program’s 1350th win and Head Coach Jack Parker’s 800th win. It was the fourth game in the last five to be played against Merrimack on this date since 1998 (all wins). The win was the 19th of the season, only the second time the team has won 19 games before 1 February (1983-84 was the other).

The Terriers scored twice 72 seconds apart late in the first period to take control of the game. Matt Gilroy scored first at 16:22 and Brandon Yip then scored on the powerplay. After a scoreless second period Merrimack drew to within once when Rob Ricci beat Kieran Millan at 4:26 of the third, but that was as close as the Warriors would get. The Terriers put the game away just 3:03 later when Colby Cohen scored on the powerplay and Millan shut the door the rest of the way. Millan made 25 saves for the win while Andrew Braithwaite made 24 in a losing effort.

Women

2009: The Boston University women’s team team defeated Vermont, 3-2, in front of 203 fans at Walter Brown Arena for the program’s and Head Coach Brian Durocher’s 58th win.

The Terriers opened the scoring when Jillian Kirchner beat Catamount goalie Kristen Olychuck on the powerplay at 10:24 of the first period. Gina Kearns deked Olychuck, who went down sideways, and passed the puck to Kirchner who put the puck into the open net. Vermont’s Molly Morrison tied the game at 16:59 of the period when she scored on a 5x4 powerplay just 2 seconds after a 5x3 ended.

In the second period Jonnie Bloemers took nice pass from Laurel Koller behind the net and beat Olychuck at 2:41. The Catamounts tied it up again less than 2 minutes later when Brittany Nelson scored on the powerplay at 4:23. Despite numerous chances for both teams the game remained tied until a streaking Kearns took a perfect pass at the Vermont blueline from Tara Watchorn, broke in alone on Olychuck and cleanly beat her for the winning goal. Allyse Wilcox made 25 saves to earn the win while Olychuck made 22 saves in the loss.

With the goal and assist Kearns brings her career totals to 47 goals and 96 points as she moves closer to becoming the first 50 goal and 100 point player in the program's history.

1930: Boston University tied New Hampshire, 2-2, on UNH’s outdoor rink at Durham. There was no overtime as BU had to catch the train back to Boston. Defenseman Bob Elliot and left winger Richard Lombard scored for the Terriers and goalie Burton Grodberg earned the tie.

1983: Boston University defeated Clarkson, the top team in the East, 6-3, at Walter Brown Arena before a SRO crowd of 3,545. BU improved to 9-9 overall and 7-7 in ECAC play, while Clarkson fell to 12-3-1 overall and 8-2-1 in the ECAC. Terrier goalie Cleon Daskalakis made 44 saves, many of the sensational variety.

The Terriers opened the scoring at 11:08 of the first when Dale Dunbar got his first goal of the season on a shot from the left point. Kevin Mutch and Cesare Carlacci assisted on the goal. The Golden Knights tied it up at 14:12 when Bob Armstrong scored a powerplay goal from the right faceoff circle. Clarkson had 17 shots in the period to 9 for BU.

In the second BU took control, as they scored four goals for a 5-1 lead after two. Paul Gerlitz put BU ahead for good at 2:42 when Brad MacGregor stole the puck and made a nice pass to Gerlitz, who put it past the Knight’s freshman goalie Jim Falle from eight feet out. Tom O’Regan scored from the middle of the right faceoff circle on the powerplay at 5:23. At 11:09 Peter Marshall put a 40-footer into the far corner of the net from the left lane on a pass he received from Mutch and Daskalakis. That was it for Falle, as Clarkson coach Bill O”Flaherty replaced him with Don Sylvestri. It didn’t matter, as Gerlitz scored his second of the game at 18:01 when he banged in a rebound of a Marshall shot.

The Golden Knights finally put everything together and dominated the Terriers in the third. At 4:52 Clarkson made it pay off when Andy Otto scored at 4:52 from the right point to make it 5-2. Then Pat Haramis scored on the powerplay at 10:04 to make it 5-3, as the Knights continued to attack. The Terriers got their wind back with 8:10 to play, after having be outshot 10-1 to that point in the period. Clarkson was unable to score again and MacGregor scored an empty net goal after the Knights Sylvestri was pulled for an extra skater.

1990: Boston University defeated New Hampshire, 4-2, at Walter Brown Arena in the 1500th game of the program’s history in front of 3,405 fans. Ed Ronan opened the scoring at 12:43 of the first when he took a pass from David Tomlinson and put the puck past Wildcat goalie Pat Morrison. Just over 5 minutes later Mike Sullivan scored unassisted on the powerplay to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead. Tomlinson made it 3-0 just 60 seconds into the second period. David MacIntyre scored on the powerplay at 16:40 of the second to put UNH on the board. In the third, Savo Mitrovic made it a one-goal game when he scored at 7:46. That was as close as the Wildcats would get as Shawn McEachern scored at 15:17 to seal the win for the Terriers. Scott Cashman made 35 saves for the win while Morrison made 42 saves in a losing effort.

1923: Boston University lost to Boston College, 3-2, in triple overtime at Boston Arena. It was a clean game from the start and shortly it was evident that the team from the Heights was overconfident. Overconfidence became surprise when Morey Kontoff, one of the Terriers brightest stars, went the length of ice and scored. Late in the third it looked like the Eagles would lose when Leo Hughes started a mad scramble in front of the BU net. With sticks flying all around the crease the puck ended up in the net. The Terriers protested that Hughs kicked the puck in to avail, so the goal stood.

With the game tied 1-1 at the end of regulation the teams agreed to play two 5-minutes overtime periods and if the game was still tied a sudden death period. The Terriers took a 2-1 lead in the first overtime period when Joe Almer, showing some of the clever ragging he had shown all night, went down and scored one of the prettiest goals seen in the Arena. In the second overtime period BC tied the game up again when Edmund Garrity flipped in a shot that caught Terriers netminder Joe Beauchemin off guard. The sudden death period was a wonder, considering the fatigued condition of the players. The Eagles showed as much gameness as the Terriers and found the first opening when Len Morrissey scored the winning goal 14 minutes into the period.

1977: Boston University defeated RPI, 6-5, in overtime at Walter Brown Arena. Rick Meagher had a hat trick, along with 2 assists for a 5-point game. Matt Marden scored 2 goals while Bob Dudley scored one. In net Jim Craig made 36 saves for the win.

2004: Boston University defeated Maine, 1-0, at Walter Brown Arena. Sean Fields made 28 saves to record his seventh career shutout, outplaying Maine’s Jimmy Howard. Both teams had chances in the first period, but were unable to convert. Early in the second Fields made two point-blank saves on shots by John Ronan and Travis Wight. On the powerplay Bryan Miller scored the lone goal of the game at 12:10 of the second when he one-timed a shot from the point. With time running down in the third the Black Bears pulled Howard, but were unable to score as Fields stopped the assault. Then, with BU in control tempers flared and with 0.3 seconds remaining in the game the players got into a free-for-all. It took seven minutes to restore order and hand out the penalties, 35 for 246 minutes. For the game the teams combined for an NCAA record 46 penalties and 268 penalty minutes.

1926: Boston University defeated Cornell, 1-0, on Beebe Lake at Ithaca. The two teams would not meet again for over forty years, when Cornell defeated BU, 8-1, in the ECAC semifinals at Boston Arena on 11 March 1966.

Ovila Gregoire scored the goal for the Terriers and goaltender Don Martin got the shutout. It was the last win Martin would get as a Terrier, as he played only one more game for BU, a loss, before being replaced in net by Sydney Silberberg.

1972: Boston University defeated Vermont, 7-2, at Walter Brown Arena in front of 3,466 fans in the first meeting between the two programs. The Terriers struck quickly, when Ron Anderson beat UVM’s Steve Eckerson just 1:11 into the first period. The Catamounts made a game of it and, at 13:59, Brad Cooke beat the Terriers’ Dan Brady to even the score at 1-all. BU retook the lead for good when Bob Gryp scored 81 seconds later and then Anderson scored on the powerplay 1:28 after that to increase the lead to 3-1.

Vermont drew to within one goal when Willie MacKinnon scored at 4:57 of the second period, but that was as close as they would get. The Catamounts held off the Terriers until 12:25 of the period when Mike LaGarde made to 4-2. In the third BU took control as Bob Brown scored at 1:06, Ric Jordon scored at 8:57 and David Wisener scored at 16:58. Brady made 23 saves for the Terriers while Eckerson made 32 for the Catamounts.

1989: Boston University shutout second ranked Minnesota, 1-0, in front of 2,853 fans at Walter Brown Arena. It was the first time the Gophers had been shutout since 14 March 1986, a span of 80 games. It was a defensive game from start to finish, with great forechecking and backchecking by both teams. BU goalie Peter Fish made 17 saves to get the shutout, outplaying Robb Stauber, who was making his first start in seven weeks. The only goal of the game came at 10:45 of the second period when Chris Lappin scored the first goal of his Terrier career. Stauber made saves on shots by Shawn McEachern and Mike Sullivan before Lappin, who moved in when he saw a delayed penalty was being called on Minnesota, picked up the second rebound from just outside the crease and put it in the net.

1990: Boston University tied Providence, 1-1, before 3,219 stunned fans at Walter Brown Arena on a Saturday afternoon. The Terriers scored the game-winning goal with 29 seconds remaining in overtime and the teams were starting to leave the ice when referee Rich Fowkes disallowed the goal and gave a penalty to Tony Amonte for playing without a helmet, after being told of the offense by linesman Bob Fowkes.

The game was a close affair, with strong two-way checking by both teams that resulted in just 5 shots on net for each team in the first. Midway through the period Providence had 2 shots on goal and BU had only one, a harmless shot from the neutral zone during a powerplay. Matt Merton, the Friars goalie, had to be sharp with six minute to play in the period when he raced to the left faceoff circle to beat Amonte to a loose puck, thereby preventing a clean break-in. With two minutes to play Merton stopped the Terriers’ best chance of the period, a turnaround backhander by Rob Regan.

The second period picked up where the first had ended, although the shot total was higher, 10 for PC and 8 for BU, as the goalies continued to stop everything sent their way, especially BU goalie Scott Cashman, who was superb. During a 10-second span early in the period he flicked out his left skate to stop a Lyle Wildgoose deflection and then smothered Mario Aube’s slapper. Midway through the period he robbed Rick Bennett from 15 feet. Then, late in the period, the Friar’s Mike Boback lifted a rebound of a Rob Gaudreau shot over Cashman, who was down and out, to give PC the lead with 2:41 remaining in the period. Merton’s hardest save came just after the goal, with Bennett in the penalty box for assaulting Cashman, as he held his ground and took an Alexandre Legault shot in the midsection, just before bodies began to pile up in the crease.

In the third period Amonte tied the game at 3:26 when he put the puck in the net on a second-chance try to Merton’s left. The game remained tied for the rest of the third sending it to overtime. Late in overtime the Friar’s had a chance to win it when Gaudreau shot a chest-high, partially screened 20-footer on net that Cashman stopped. Then, with less than a minute left in overtime Amonte and Aube went for the puck behind the Friar net and Aube knocked Amonte’s helmet off. Amonte continued to battle for the puck and won it, passing it back to Kevin O’Sullivan at the point. O’Sullivan drove the puck on net and Joe Sacco tipped it in for what appeared to be the game-winning goal. However lineman Fowkes had seen Amonte playing without his helmet and told referee Fowkes. After a discussion referee Fowkes called a penalty on Amonte and disallowed the goal, forcing BU to kill a Friar’s powerplay for the final 29 seconds to hang onto the tie.

1983: Boston University defeated Dartmouth, 6-5, in overtime, at Walter Brown Arena in front of 2,591 fans. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams taking turns with the lead. BU scored first when Tom O’Regan received a pass from Marc Sinclair and put it in the net. Dartmouth’s Dan Nugent tied it when he picked up a rebound and put it past Terrier goalie Cleon Daskalakis.

In the second Dartmouth’s Bill Flanigan received a penalty at 4:14 to put BU on the powerplay. At 5:41 Terrier Dale Dunbar received a penalty and the two teams played 4-on-4 for 23 seconds before the Big Green’s Doug Hirsch received a penalty giving BU a 4-on-3 powerplay. O’Regan scored his second goal of the game at 6:13 and created a storm over which Dartmouth player should be released from the penalty box. Instead of taking Flanigan, who had 1 second left on his penalty, out of the box, referee John McCarthy released Hirsch, who had 1:51 left on his penalty. Coach Parker went ballistic, but to no avail, and instead of 4-on-4 play for 1:28 and a 23 second BU powerplay, Dartmouth received a 1:28 powerplay. The Big Green were unable to score on the man advantage, but 6 seconds after BU returned to full strength Bruce Cullen tied it at 2-all. Flanigan gave Dartmouth the 3-2 lead at 9:08 when he scored on a Scott Borek rebound on a shorthanded break. The Terriers’ Mark Pierog tied the game again when he cut in front of the net and scored at 11:49. Allen Tabor gave Dartmouth back the lead at 13:42 when he cut around the BU defense and flipped a shot behind Daskalakis. O’Regan complete his hat trick at 15:43 when he took a pass from Peter Marshall and put the puck in the net past Big Green goalie Carey Gandy.

The Terriers retook the lead 47 seconds into the third when a Sinclair’s shot from the side glanced off a Dartmouth stick and through Gandy’s legs. At 6:48 Cullen tied it again when he skated in on another shorthanded situation, went behind the Terrier net, gained control of the puck and swept around to score. With just 3 seconds remaining in regulation Dartmouth had a great chance to win the game when Mark Ardagna cut in on Daskalakis and took a shot that came within inches of going in the net, but Daskalakis came up huge to make the save. In overtime Terrier defenseman George Klapes dropped the puck to O’Regan in the Dartmouth zone and he moved in on Gandy and prepared to shoot when he saw Sinclair busting down the right wing. O’Regan fed the puck across to Sinclair who settled the bouncing puck and then shot it into the net for the winning goal at 3:03.

1986: Boston University defeated Northern Michigan, 8-7, in overtime, at Walter Brown Arena in front of 2,262 fans. It was the third straight overtime game for the Terriers, as they defeated Northeastern on 14 January, 5-4, and the Wildcats the previous day [17 January], again by a 5-4 score. It was also the third of four straight games between the Terriers and Wildcats that went to overtime, as the two teams played overtime games on 29 December 1984 at Lakeview Arena and again on 15 November 1986 at Walter Brown Arena, both NMU victories.

The game was raucous and unbridled from the start and at 7:16 of the first BU’s Scott Shaunessy and NMU’s Joe West squared off for the first fight on the evening’s card. Both players received fighting majors and game disqualifications and as Shaunessy had already received a game disqualification earlier in the season he was suspended for the next two games. After the game resumed Clark Donatelli scored when he tipped-in Ed Lowney’s shot at 16:56 of the first. In the second period the Wildcats tied it up on the powerplay on a shot through a screen by Daryl Olsen at 11:47. The Terriers retook the lead less then two minutes later when John Cullen scored at 13:42 of the period. The lead, however, was short-lived, as Northern’s Rod Poindexter tied it up again at 17:22 of the period.

The third period turned into a slugfest, both on the scoreboard, as 10 goals were scored, and on the ice. The Wildcats took their first lead of the game when Troy Jacobsen scored on a breakaway just 1:52 into the period. Sixty-three second later BU’s Tony Majkozak tied it when he scored on a rebound of a Brad MacGregor shot. Northern responded immediately and retook the lead on Kory Wright’s backhander 29 seconds after Majkozak's goal. The Wildcats opened up a 2-goal lead, 5-3, on Poindexter’s unassisted goal, his second, 25 seconds later. The goal scoring then took a short break and at 6:49 NMU’s Jeff Grade and BU’s Paul Gerlitz squared off for the second fight on the evening’s card. As in the earlier fight, both players received fighting majors and game disqualifications.

When the game resumed the Terriers wasted little time in closing the deficit to one when Lowney scored a questionable goal from a mad scrimmage in the crease at 8:31. Just over two minutes later Gary Emmons gave Northern Michigan a 2-goal lead again when he scored at 10:43. Scott Young and Mike Kelfer worked together for a pretty goal when Kelfer cut to the post, took a perfect pass from Young and put it in the net at 12:51. The Wildcats responded with just under four minutes left in the third when Emmons took a pass from Olsen and went in alone on Terrier goalie Bob Deraney, beating him to give NMU a 7-5 lead at 16:04. BU, however, was just getting warmed up and with 2:43 left in the third Kelfer knocked a clearing pass out of the air with his stick, collected it and shot it into the far corner of the net to make it a one goal game. Northern’s Dave Randall took a hooking penalty 16 seconds later and BU took advantage of the opportunity. Young took a pass from Jay Octeau and put it into the net with 1:43 remaining for the tying goal.

In overtime Cullen won a faceoff from Emmons in the Wildcats’ zone and Lowney tipped it back to Octeau on the right point. Octeau blistered a shot to the far post that beat Northern’s goalie Dennis Jiannaras 23 seconds into overtime for the game-winner.

1948: Boston University defeated Yale, 4-3, at New Haven Arena. It was the first win for the Terriers in the series, as the Eli had won the first 20 games since the series started 24 years earlier, on 13 February 1924. It was the major turning point in the series, as BU took control, raking up a 29-10-3 record starting with the win.

Yale opened the scoring just 47 seconds into the first period when Moher, assisted by Wood, put the puck in the net past Terrier goalie Ralph Bevins. BU’s Benjamin Forbes scored unassisted at 10:46 of the first to tie the game. With just 27 seconds left in the first Yale’s Clapp, assisted by Moher, put the Eli up 2-1 after one.

In the second William Gibson, assisted by Bob Bell, scored for the Terriers at 10:47. Neither team scored the rest of the period, as the game remained tied, 2-2, after two. Yale took the lead in the third for the third time when Moher, assisted by Clapp and Wood, scored his second goal of the game at 6:32. The Terriers countered, tying the game for the third time just 49 seconds later on Gibson’s second goal of the game. Assists went to Bell and Bill Jurgelevich. BU’s Bell, assisted by Lloyd Robinson, then scored the game-winner to give the Terriers the lead and the victory.

1988: Three days after upsetting Wisconsin, Boston University defeated North Dakota, 4-2, at Walter Brown Arena. Mike Kelfer led the Terriers to victory over the defending NCAA champions with a pair of goals, giving BU its first win against the Sioux in seven meetings.

BU opened the scoring when Ian Wood’s 20-foot knuckler handcuffed Sioux goalie Scott Brower at 4:59 of the first period. The Terriers were unable to score on a powerplay in the middle of the period and just after the penalty ended North Dakota took off on a two-on-one break and Grant Paranica banged in the rebound past Terrier goalie Peter Fish to knot the game up. BU regained the lead on a powerplay goal at 16:57 when Kelfer’s 25-footer glanced off Brower’s glove and trickled into the net.

In the second period, with North Dakota on the powerplay, Paranica tied the game again when he rammed Steve Johnson’s pass into the net from in front of Fish. Late in the period the Sioux received back-to-back penalties and BU took advantage. With 10 seconds left in the second penalty, and 46 seconds left in the period, Dave Tomlinson redirected Matt Pesklewis’ 20-foot shot past Brower. Kelfer was also credited with an assist for the 100th point of his Terrier career.

North Dakota’s Gary Valk was called for crosschecking at 19:59 of the second and when he slammed his stick against the boards he was called for unsportsmanlike conduct. BU started the third with 3:59 of powerplay time but Brower kept the puck out of the net, stopping Kelfer twice. The Sioux counter-attacked after the powerplay expired and Fish stopped a Lee Davidson backhander five minutes into the period when he slid across the crease for the save. Fish stoned Davidson again when he knocked down a 40-foot shot with his glove and smothered the rebound with North Dakota on a 4-on-3. Just after killing the penalty Mike Lappin tipped a loose puck out of the BU zone to Mike Sullivan. Sullivan made a centering pass to Kelfer as the pair crossed the UND blueline on a 2-on-1 break, and Kelfer tucked the puck past Brower at 8:45 to give BU a 4-2 lead.

That was it for the scoring, but with 12 seconds remaining in the game tempers flared and several scuffles broke out, as did a fight between Terrier Steve Shaunessy and Sioux Brent Bobyck. When order was restored referee Frank Cole assessed 7 penalties for 27 minutes to BU and 5 penalties for 23 minutes to North Dakota. For the game BU received 43 minutes in penalties and North Dakota received 61 minutes. After the game UND Coach Gino Gasparini said the game was the worst officiated he had ever seen and that the refs got to them.

1932: Boston University defeated Bates, 2-1, at Boston Arena. Carl Clem scored a goal and had an assist for a 2-point game, while Walter Bender scored a goal and Richard French earned an assist. Russell Wight earned the win for the Terriers.

1980: Boston University defeated New Hampshire, 10-3, at Snively Arena to win the 700th game in the program’s history.

1933: Boston University shutout Army, 7-0, at Smith Rink at West Point. The Terriers excelled in their stick work and skating and pressed the Cadets throughout the game. Carl Clem, Paul Rowe and John Lax were outstanding for BU, while Donahue and Wagstaff were the best players for Army. The game was played in three 24minute periods.

Both teams started aggressively, with Clem and Rowe leading the BU attack on the Army net. Clem scored at 3:50 from a hard scrimmage in front of the Cadet cage. Army counter-attacked, with Wagstaff and Donahue carrying the puck close to the BU net and Wagstaff’s hard drive being beautifully fended off by Russell Wight, the Terrier goalie. BU came back, pressing Army with excellent passing as Walter Bender, Clem and Rowe bombarded Van Nostrand, the Cadet goalie. Bender made a rink length rush and shot the puck into the net for BU’s second goal at 13:17 of the first period. Rowe scored from the side of the net on a shot from another scrimmage at 22:35 to close the first.

In the second the Terriers continued to attack and Army’s defense was sorely tested throughout. Bender made it 4-0 at 2:36, scoring on a pass from Clem. On the ensuing faceoff Army showed a burst of speed as Telford shot a hard drive off the post. Lax scored at 16:45 when he drove a fast shot past Van Nostrand to make it 5-0 after two periods. In the third Clem scored twice for the Terriers to make the final score 7-0.

1988: Boston University broke out of a nine game winless streak (0-6-3) by stunning Wisconsin, 10-6, before 1,971 fans at Walter Brown Arena. Wisconsin came into the game with a 16-8 record and winners of 8 of their last 10 games. It was just the Terrier’s fifth win of the season (5-11-3) and sent them on a 7-1-0 run. The Boston Globe dubbed 'Mike Line' of left wing Mike Sullivan (2-1-3), center Mike Lappin (1-2-3) and right wing Mike Kelfer (2-4-6) combined for 5 goals and 7 assists to lead the Terrier attack.

The Badgers pressured Terrier goalie Peter Fish in the first, but he turned aside all 17 shots. BU took the lead when Dave Tomlinson scored at 15:34. Chris Lappin fed Joe Sacco, who blasted a 40-footer, which Tomlinson tipped past Badger goalie Dean Anderson. The Terriers played the body and threw Wisconsin’s game off, allowing long shots that Fish handled with ease.

The second was BU’s best period, as they increased the lead to 5-1. With the Terriers on a four-on-three Sacco scored at 8:39 from the right faceoff circle after taking a nice feed from Tom Dion. Wisconsin struck back at 10:28 when Dennis Sneddon tipped a 45-foot shot by Pat Ford past Fish. BU quickly regained the 2-goal lead at 11:51 when Kelfer stole the puck, went in alone on Anderson and beat him from the crease. Sullivan upped the lead to 3-1 when he put the puck in the net from the left faceoff circle after he was setup by Kelfer. With the second period winding down Ville Kentala scored at 18:46 when he circled around the net and put the puck in from the crease.

The Terriers continued to attack in the third, but Wisconsin scored the next two goals to close within two, 5-3. Glen Revak scored from in tight on a pass from Paul Ranheim, and then Chris Tancill scored on a 40-footer from the right side. BU, however, bounced back to retake a four goal lead as Sacco scored from in close at 11:58 and Tom Ryan got a powerplay goal from 15 feet out at 12:53. Just 8 second later Sullivan scored again to put the Terriers up 8-3, but the Badgers scored the next three on goals by Sneddon, Steve Rohlik and Steve Tuttle. Up 8-6 BU ended the shootout when Kelfer scored his second goal and then Lappin scored for the final tally.

1985: Boston University won a 1-0 forfeit victory over Michigan Tech at Walter Brown Arena. With the Terriers leading 5-1, Michigan Tech coach Jim Nahrgang took his team off the ice with 7:24 remaining in the second and when they did not return in the allowed three minutes the forfeit was declared by referee Bob Quinn.

BU started walk-on goalie Bob Deraney, who had only played one previous game, due to injuries to both Terry Taillefer and Peter Fish. Deraney stopped all 19 shots he faced in the first as the Terriers took a 2-0 lead. Ed Lowney buried a 20-footer at 5:07 and then scored again at 17:37 on the powerplay when Scott Shaunessy stopped a clearing attempt by the Huskies and directed the puck to Lowney, who blistered an easy 15-footer.

Michigan Tech closed it to 2-1 just 52 seconds into the second period when Chris Cichocki scored on a 35-footer from the right side. That was it for Tech as BU took control of the game. First Tom Ryan scored at 4:54 after he received a pass from a prone Chuck Sullivan. Then Shaunessy scored from in tight and finally John Cullen scored on a 5-3 at 9:22 of the second.

Shaunessy and Huskies goalie Darryl Pierce started mixing it up in front of the net and referee Quinn called a five-minute high-sticking major and double minor for roughing on Pierce and double minor for roughing on Shaunessy at 12:36. Nahrgang then pulled the Huskies off the ice, forfeiting the game.

After the game Nahrgang stated he was afraid that the game could get out of hand and some player might be hurt. He also said that the game was not being called the same as the Friday night game and it bothered him that Hockey East used different officials for the two games.

Terrier coach Jack Parker said that in all his years he had never seen anything like it.

1923: Boston University won its first ever game, defeating Massachusetts Agricultural College [UMass], 6-1, at Boston Arena. It was the sixth game BU had played over the course of three seasons.

The BU team showed remarkable improvement since its last game at the Arena and the effectiveness of the team proved that it should rate high among college teams before the end of the season. Joseph Almer, the BU center, featured in the scoring, smashing home a hat trick that helped to give the Bostonians a decided edge over the Aggies.

Morey Kontoff, an alert and fast defenseman, started the scoring in the first period, taking the left lane and getting away his accurate shot a quarter ice. Before the period ended Adolphus Provost, who showed flashes of brilliant hockey, duplicated Kontoff’s feat. BU’s teamwork started to show in the second, as Robert Blais passed to Almer, who was on the job to score. In the final period Almer’s alertness again counted, as he picked up a rebound and put it through Alger, the Aggies goalie. Almer completed his hat trick when he scored from a scrimmage. Harry McArdle finished BU’s scoring for the game, weaving through the Aggies defense for the goal. The Aggies were saved from being shutout when Lamb, the center, snapped the puck past BU goaltender Joe Beauchemin.

1925: Boston University and Cornell met for the first time on the ice of Beebe Lake at Ithaca. In the opening game of the season for Cornell the Big Red went down to defeat at the hands of BU by a score of 7 to 2. The superior stick work and skating of the Terriers proved too much for the Cornellians, who had been handicapped by lack of ice, to overcome.

The New Englanders kept the play in Cornell's territory throughout most of the game. It was not until the third period that Cornell succeeded in breaking up the Terriers’ passing with any success. BU left wing John Lawless scored on a shot in the first minute of play, but Cornell left wing Cook tied the game immediately after. Then the Terriers passing game began to work and at the end of the first period BU was leading 4-1. In the second period BU scored three more goals for a 7-1 lead after two. In the third Cornell braced and not only succeeded in breaking up the BU passes, but held them scoreless while Aaronson scored a goal for the Big Red. For game the Terriers’ Lawless scored two goals, as did Chester Scott, while Julian and Morey Kontoff each scored one, as did Rod Ling.

1925: Boston University was shutout by Hamilton College in the only game between the two schools. The game, the first of two BU played on an upstate NY trip, was played at Clinton, NY in the 4-year-old Russell Sage Rink. The Buff and Blue held a slight advantage in each period, but only the play of the Hamilton goalies prevented the Scarlet and White from scoring.

1970: Boston University defeated Clarkson, 4-3, in overtime, at Boston Arena. Clarkson scored at 3:19 of first on a powerplay. Mike Hyndman was called for high sticking and the Golden Knights finally made the Terriers pay when John Halme scored 9 seconds before the powerplay expired. BU evened the scored at 1-all when John Danby put the puck past Clarkson goalie Bruce Bullock at 8:45 of the period. BU struck quickly in the second when Larry Davenport scored just 15 seconds into the period to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Steve Sterling was called holding at 8:49, but Danby scored shorthanded for his second of the game at 10:21 to give the Terriers a 3-1 led after two.

In the third the Golden Knights out worked the Terriers and Bill O’Flaherty scored as 7:31 to make it a one-goal game. Clarkson tied the game at 3-all with just 3:08 remaining when Jerry Kemp got the puck past Terrier goalie Tim Regan. In overtime Dick Toomey scored unassisted at 3:338 for the game-winner. For the game Reagan made 27 saves for the Terriers and Bullock made 18 saves for the Golden Knights.

1941: Boston University defeated New Hampshire, 8-5, on UNH’s outdoor rink at Durham. Terrier right wing John Chambers scored 4 goals, including the game-winner, and also assisted on two other goals for a six-point night. Linemate center Paul Brown also collected a hat trick, scoring three goals and assisting on three others as he also had a six-point night. Not to be left out, linemate left wing Bud Hines scored a goal and assisted on two others for a three-point game. Terrier goalie Henry Sullivan played two-and-a-half periods and gave up all five goals before being replaced by David Bott for the final half of the third period.

1978: On 7 January 1978 Boston University defeated Princeton, 4-3, at Baker Rink in Princeton. It was the Terriers 10th straight win to start the season, tying the team record, which had been set during the 1964-65 season. John Melanson scored 2 goals for BU, while Mark Fidler and Tony Meagher each scored one. In net Brian Durocher made 31 saves against the Tigers for the win.

1960: Boston University defeated Clarkson, 4-2, at Boston Arena for the 300th win in the program’s history.

1962: Army defeated Boston University, 4-0, at Stuart Rink at West Point. It was the first victory by the Cadets over the Terriers in the history of the series that began on 28 January 1925. It was the twenty-ninth game played in the series, of which Army had previously managed only two ties against BU [in 1940 and 1941] and broke a 15-game winning streak by the Terriers. Only five of the 29 games were played in Boston, the other 24 were all played at West Point.

After a scoreless first period Army went up 1-0 at 2:09 of the second on a goal by Tom Dooley, the only scoring in the second period. In the third Army scored three more times as Dolley scored again, along with Dick Peterson and Mike Buckley. Cadet goalie Ron Chisolm earned his third shutout of the season, stopping all 26 shots he faced, twelve of them in the third. Terrier goalie Bruce Plante made 25 saves in a losing effort.
