12 January

1985: Boston University won a 1-0 forfeit victory over Michigan Tech at Walter Brown Arena. With the Terriers leading 5-1, Michigan Tech coach Jim Nahrgang took his team off the ice with 7:24 remaining in the second and when they did not return in the allowed three minutes the forfeit was declared by referee Bob Quinn.

BU started walk-on goalie Bob Deraney, who had only played one previous game, due to injuries to both Terry Taillefer and Peter Fish. Deraney stopped all 19 shots he faced in the first as the Terriers took a 2-0 lead. Ed Lowney buried a 20-footer at 5:07 and then scored again at 17:37 on the powerplay when Scott Shaunessy stopped a clearing attempt by the Huskies and directed the puck to Lowney, who blistered an easy 15-footer.

Michigan Tech closed it to 2-1 just 52 seconds into the second period when Chris Cichocki scored on a 35-footer from the right side. That was it for Tech as BU took control of the game. First Tom Ryan scored at 4:54 after he received a pass from a prone Chuck Sullivan. Then Shaunessy scored from in tight and finally John Cullen scored on a 5-3 at 9:22 of the second.

Shaunessy and Huskies goalie Darryl Pierce started mixing it up in front of the net and referee Quinn called a five-minute high-sticking major and double minor for roughing on Pierce and double minor for roughing on Shaunessy at 12:36. Nahrgang then pulled the Huskies off the ice, forfeiting the game.

After the game Nahrgang stated he was afraid that the game could get out of hand and some player might be hurt. He also said that the game was not being called the same as the Friday night game and it bothered him that Hockey East used different officials for the two games.

Terrier coach Jack Parker said that in all his years he had never seen anything like it.

11 January

1923: Boston University won its first ever game, defeating Massachusetts Agricultural College [UMass], 6-1, at Boston Arena. It was the sixth game BU had played over the course of three seasons.

The BU team showed remarkable improvement since its last game at the Arena and the effectiveness of the team proved that it should rate high among college teams before the end of the season. Joseph Almer, the BU center, featured in the scoring, smashing home a hat trick that helped to give the Bostonians a decided edge over the Aggies.

Morey Kontoff, an alert and fast defenseman, started the scoring in the first period, taking the left lane and getting away his accurate shot a quarter ice. Before the period ended Adolphus Provost, who showed flashes of brilliant hockey, duplicated Kontoff’s feat. BU’s teamwork started to show in the second, as Robert Blais passed to Almer, who was on the job to score. In the final period Almer’s alertness again counted, as he picked up a rebound and put it through Alger, the Aggies goalie. Almer completed his hat trick when he scored from a scrimmage. Harry McArdle finished BU’s scoring for the game, weaving through the Aggies defense for the goal. The Aggies were saved from being shutout when Lamb, the center, snapped the puck past BU goaltender Joe Beauchemin.

10 January

1925: Boston University and Cornell met for the first time on the ice of Beebe Lake at Ithaca. In the opening game of the season for Cornell the Big Red went down to defeat at the hands of BU by a score of 7 to 2. The superior stick work and skating of the Terriers proved too much for the Cornellians, who had been handicapped by lack of ice, to overcome.

The New Englanders kept the play in Cornell's territory throughout most of the game. It was not until the third period that Cornell succeeded in breaking up the Terriers’ passing with any success. BU left wing John Lawless scored on a shot in the first minute of play, but Cornell left wing Cook tied the game immediately after. Then the Terriers passing game began to work and at the end of the first period BU was leading 4-1. In the second period BU scored three more goals for a 7-1 lead after two. In the third Cornell braced and not only succeeded in breaking up the BU passes, but held them scoreless while Aaronson scored a goal for the Big Red. For game the Terriers’ Lawless scored two goals, as did Chester Scott, while Julian and Morey Kontoff each scored one, as did Rod Ling.

9 January

1925: Boston University was shutout by Hamilton College in the only game between the two schools. The game, the first of two BU played on an upstate NY trip, was played at Clinton, NY in the 4-year-old Russell Sage Rink. The Buff and Blue held a slight advantage in each period, but only the play of the Hamilton goalies prevented the Scarlet and White from scoring.

1970: Boston University defeated Clarkson, 4-3, in overtime, at Boston Arena. Clarkson scored at 3:19 of first on a powerplay. Mike Hyndman was called for high sticking and the Golden Knights finally made the Terriers pay when John Halme scored 9 seconds before the powerplay expired. BU evened the scored at 1-all when John Danby put the puck past Clarkson goalie Bruce Bullock at 8:45 of the period. BU struck quickly in the second when Larry Davenport scored just 15 seconds into the period to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Steve Stirling was called holding at 8:49, but Danby scored shorthanded for his second of the game at 10:21 to give the Terriers a 3-1 led after two.

In the third the Golden Knights out worked the Terriers and Bill O’Flaherty scored as 7:31 to make it a one-goal game. Clarkson tied the game at 3-all with just 3:08 remaining when Jerry Kemp got the puck past Terrier goalie Tim Regan. In overtime Dick Toomey scored unassisted at 3:338 for the game-winner. For the game Reagan made 27 saves for the Terriers and Bullock made 18 saves for the Golden Knights.

8 January

1941: Boston University defeated New Hampshire, 8-5, on UNH’s outdoor rink at Durham. Terrier right wing John Chambers scored 4 goals, including the game-winner, and also assisted on two other goals for a six-point night. Linemate center Paul Brown also collected a hat trick, scoring three goals and assisting on three others as he also had a six-point night. Not to be left out, linemate left wing Bud Hines scored a goal and assisted on two others for a three-point game. Terrier goalie Henry Sullivan played two-and-a-half periods and gave up all five goals before being replaced by David Bott for the final half of the third period.

7 January

1978: On 7 January 1978 Boston University defeated Princeton, 4-3, at Baker Rink in Princeton. It was the Terriers 10th straight win to start the season, tying the team record, which had been set during the 1964-65 season. John Melanson scored 2 goals for BU, while Mark Fidler and Tony Meagher each scored one. In net Brian Durocher made 31 saves against the Tigers for the win.

6 January

1960: Boston University defeated Clarkson, 4-2, at Boston Arena for the 300th win in the program’s history.

1962: Army defeated Boston University, 4-0, at Stuart Rink at West Point. It was the first victory by the Cadets over the Terriers in the history of the series that began on 28 January 1925. It was the twenty-ninth game played in the series, of which Army had previously managed only two ties against BU [in 1940 and 1941] and broke a 15-game winning streak by the Terriers. Only five of the 29 games were played in Boston, the other 24 were all played at West Point.

After a scoreless first period Army went up 1-0 at 2:09 of the second on a goal by Tom Dooley, the only scoring in the second period. In the third Army scored three more times as Dolley scored again, along with Dick Peterson and Mike Buckley. Cadet goalie Ron Chisolm earned his third shutout of the season, stopping all 26 shots he faced, twelve of them in the third. Terrier goalie Bruce Plante made 25 saves in a losing effort.
